Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Evening” has been a customer favourite at MoMA because it first appeared in our Van Gogh retrospective in 1935 after which was acquired in 1939. This painting is like an allegorical poem on the elements; we feel the space always in motion like waves on a sea where the horizon remains the same; the pine rising like a flame, smells the fire of its resin like a hot summer night in Provence under a lighted sky; the beauty of the dance of all these elements tames their forces to lean them on the cradle of a small village which ignores everything then of the dangerousness of the forces of nature in the universe …
